Sticky Piano Keys: Causes and When to Call a Technician

A sticky piano key feels late, stays down, or rubs its neighbors. In Austin this often shows up after a humid spell or a long run of dry air conditioning. Some causes are simple. Some need piano key repair before the action wears further.

Common causes

Keys and action parts are wood, felt, and tight clearances. Moisture and debris move those clearances.

• Humidity swell after a storm or a closed, damp room
• Very dry indoor air from summer air conditioning
• Dust, hair, or a small object between keys
• Worn or compressed felt in the action
• A key that has shifted and rubs its neighbor
• A problem lower in the action, not only at the key top

What you can check safely

You can look without opening the action.

• See whether one key or a group of keys is involved
• Look for an object, a warped key cover, or a spill on the keytops
• Notice whether the problem started after a move, a cleaning, or a storm
• Play the same notes when the room has been closed and cooled for a day

Do not pour powder, oil, or household cleaner into the keys. Do not remove action parts unless you already know that work. Those steps are a common way a simple stick becomes a repair.
